You understand the Afghan quagmire well. I feel bad for the inevitable hits women’s rights will take after we leave, but I don’t know anyone who has an answer for that. The Taliban are not particularly keen on listening to world public opinion, so outrage won’t cut it. And we can’t stay there another 20 years.

We could impose sanctions on them if they revert to their prior behavior towards women, but then we’d need to be consistent with such a policy and do the same with a variety of oil kingdoms.

Ooops.

Besides, a lot of women would tell me we need to get our own house in order (if you’re a woman who feels safe going out alone at night, raise your hand) before we try to control others.
