You might enjoy Sarah Ruden’s gospel translation called, appropriately enough, "The Gospels", where she points out in her translation of Luke that the Greek word "Kataluma" does not refer to a commercial inn but just a place to crash. Her translation further states that Mary dressed the infant Jesus in bands of cloth and rested him in a feeding trough! Yikes! How unbecoming for our Savior! "Because," the translation says, “there was no other place for them where they were staying." She points out that it isn’t an Inn.

The ESV Bible calls it an Inn, and the translation notes claim that it is a commercial inn, so people’s ignorance isn’t necessarily because they don’t read the Bible.

Much of what we learn is literally taught by the patriarchs who teach Christian doctrine.
