William Julius Wilson wrote about an emerging underclass in sections of some inner cities way back in the 1970s.
He pointed out that the hopelessness in these communities was fostered by a lack of employment opportunities.
Fifty years later, that same sense of hopelessness has spread to huge segments of the white community for the same reasons.
As usual, and this has been true since the early days of slavery, as you I am sure are aware, there is a powerful group of people claiming that the nation has limited resources, and "those people" will suck "us" dry if we let them. Divide and conquer has been the white nationalist strategy forever.
This is why we need a WPA 2.0. With a strong dose of affirmative action thrown into the mix. And fewer old white guys (my peer group) in power.
