When writing an article for Medium it may not be technically accurate to call Chesapeake Energy Corporation a fracking company, since it often purchases the ground assets and it participated in numerous other fossil fuel endeavors, making most of its early cash in natural gas exploration.

But it is easier for people to understand than saying something like, "Chesapeake Energy Corporation, a fossil fuels exploration company with significant interests in real estate."

I can say that for you, if you'd like, but it doesn't change the facts behind the debt-based nature of fracking, nor its effects on the environment.
