When Rock first came onto the scene, he sometimes made me laugh til my stomach hurt. But I haven't found him funny for a long time now.
I remember the same thing happened to George Carlin toward the very end of his career. He always complained about things in his routine, but at the end, he sounded like a bitter old man.
As for the slap, my first reaction when I saw it on live TV was, "wow, Chris Rock musta really had that comin', cuz that's a career buster."
Not sure that opinion has changed much, except maybe the career-buster part.
