Well that was kind of my point. Many of those westerns glorified ethnic cleansing. Why would he want to be on the losing end of that? He wanted to be an Indian chief, not a cowboy or Union soldier (we still as a nation don't really speak much of the role Union soldiers played, especially after the civil war, in the decimation of that population).
