We are in late stage capitalism/empire. Nobody's happy, not even the oppressive elite that got us here through genocide, slavery and ethnic "cleansing" (surely a phrase invented by the neo liberals you speak of, since there is nothing cleansing about it), and are today urging division. Whatever there once was of a leftist cause died 40 years ago, and has been getting pulverized ever since.
