This is great stuff (the subject matter isn't, but the exposure is). I'm wrapping up an alternative history novel about the rise of an "African" nation in the Americas after emancipation by the Brits after they win the revolutionary war. I'm always on the lookout for stuff like this. In my novel, Charleston's grand Exchange building (probably built by slaves) , which doubled as a slave market and, for a short time (but maybe not so short - as your article points out, so much history is whitewashed), a slave jail for escaping slaves, becomes the centerpiece of the new nation's capital.
So many things have been erased from history that it boggles the mind.
I've been researching and writing about this stuff for more than 2 years now. Even if the novel doesn't get picked up by a major publisher, I have learned so much about Black, African, and indigenous American history that it will have been a worthwhile allocation of my time. And I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface.
Thanks for the help! Lol.
