This is great stuff. You'll be interested in my novel, Restive Souls, which features a "maroon" from Haiti (he calls himself a cimarron, actually) who helps turn the tide against the Americans in the Revolutionary War by working with a British spy. The Brits win and emancipate the slaves, partly as punishment for the rebellion.

In Restive Souls, the maroons mix with the locals in Florida to create the Seminole Nation. The plantations of Georgia are overrun by freed slaves, who convert the plantations to their own ends. Great fun!
