This has actually happened countless times. It's one reason that gay marriage is now "polling well" (not the best term). Many conservatives find they have loved ones in their families, and a light turns on.

Obviously, the light doesn't always turn on, but the acceptance and welcoming of people coming out has had a net positive effect, despite the sickening backlash.
