I should have mentioned in the article that I voted for Leslie Lynch King Jr for President in 1976.

His mother changed his name in his youth to Gerald Ford, after his stepfather, not in small part because his biological father regularly beat up his mom.

This was back in the day when the choice really WAS the lesser of two evils. Although, of course, Jimmy Carter was most definitely not evil. But either was Ford. There were few major policy differences between the parties.

To try to beat soaring inflation, Ford proposed a one-year, five-percent income tax increase on corporations and wealthy individuals.

He also signed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975, despite his concerns about how it would affect the budget (see Manchin, Joe, for an opposite reaction).

Ford was the last Republican I ever voted for, because the party swerved so hard to the right beginning with Reagan.
