Richard North Patterson, the author of 16 NY Times bestseller books, wrote a pretty long screed on substack about the refusal of dozens of major publishing houses to print his book, Trial, because he dared to include a Black man as a main character. The book couldn't possibly be more illustrative of the inequalities of the South, but that didn't matter. He did considerable research on the subject, including interviews with people screwed by the "justice" system of the South.
