Raskolnikov displayed what Dostoyevsky considered to be a common Russian trait - deeply depressing ruminations, and if it can be fed by a detective bearing down on him, all the better.

If he had been an American, he would have clobbered the detective and fled to Mexico, and it would have become a road trip story.

As for Hemingway, I never really enjoyed his writing style much. Very subjective opinion - it's just me.
