One problem I see with this article is that its premise, that we are living under a rising crime rate, is wrong.
Statistics show that violent crimes rose precipitously during the pandemic, but are falling again as we get out from under the covers.
There are lots of stats available but I'll focus on murders, since that's the scariest kind.
So far in 2022, murders are down five percent compared to this time last year.
Crime in general had been trending downward before COVID. It spiked, and Fox News took advantage by convincing Americans that we were inundated by criminals. Fox News's continuing propaganda seeped into mainstream media, which is why most Americans, according to Gallup, believe we are trending upward in crime, whereas the opposite is actually true.
A bigger problem to consider is America's mass incarceration system. America incarcerates more citizens than any other major economy on earth, by a good degree.
We address mental illness, not in hospitals, but in jails, where there are no qualified mental health practitioners, only angry, underpaid correction officers with batons and pepper spray.
We incarcerate people for drug use, instead of treating them.
This leaves us a system that is absolutely unable to cope with the real nasty stuff.
It's a circle of idiocy.
