Nice historical background on the lack of meaning in party names. Obviously, the current Republican Party is not the party of Lincoln.
It's too bad we don't have a parliamentary system to iron out this mess.
If we did, our party structure, assuming Trump loses, might look something like this:
Progressives/Greens
Centrists (status quo types)
True Libertarians
Nationalists
Most polls show that people like progressive positions. Florida is voting for a minimum wage hike to $15, for example, that is polling well and likely to win, and voters there recently passed a referendum allowing felons to vote (that Republicans promptly sabotaged).
When given an opportunity to expand Medicaid, they say yes.
Such a system would also give us a truer gauge on racism problem in America.
40% of people still seem to consistently support Trump. I have to hope that doesn't mean 40% of Americans are racist.
