My dad claimed a Cherokee lineage. I think it was just a thing to do back then. I didn't see any in my DNA history, either. But I don't put much stock in those tests either way.

Ancestry.com is better used for tracking what people were up to. My dad's side is so far untraceable beyond my grandfather.

My mom's side is much more detailed.

My family on my mom's side arrived in North America in the first ships out of England, so I searched for evidence of slave holding. I couldn't find any, so I was happy about that. There was a ton of family documentation, but nothing like that.

They tended to move west whenever civilization encroached, probably settling on First Settler lands, so they aren't completely exonerated.

I'm pretty convinced that no close relatives were involved in slave holding, so to me, that's way more important than the actual blood makeup. But then again, maybe they burned their receipts.
