One of the interesting aspects of non-Christians is the consciousness that they rely on to point out its wrongs.
By this I mean that there is a good nature that resides in us all - I call it the Holy Spirit. It exists within us whether we like it or not, or whether or not we choose to reject it.
The consciousness that screams against the outrages of certain kinds of Christian behavior is sourced from a very deep level of spirituality governed by the Holy Spirit.
C.S. Lewis talks a lot about this in his work, Mere Christianity.
So if my conscience feels heavy about something, I know it is not God. We often do things we feel guilty about. To me, that is the Holy Spirit speaking to us.
When it happens to me, it feels like it is coming directly from inside my heart. It is visceral. When I go against it, it gnaws at me.
That, to me, is God.
