LBJ was a strange dude. I think a lot of the reason he got civil rights and social programs done was out of an intense loyalty towards a man he didn't like much at first, JFK. I'm not saying he wasn't interested in getting that stuff done on his own, but I think he brought a special intensity to the process when he worked towards those goals in the wake of JFK's assassination.

Vietnam was just part of the overall flaw of foreign policy objectives that have dominated American statecraft for decades. Trump wasn't really wrong when he initially identified it as a problem, he's just, quite obviously, the wrong guy to fix it. Plus, he's now clearly insane, as any 2 minute observation of him talking proves.
