I've written about this so you may have seen it: But when I was a teenager I was in (I think) Michigan City, which is where the dunes are, visiting a little store catering to tourists and such with my best friend at the time. The lady who owned it watched my friend the whole time, never paying attention to me. It had all kinds of delightful, sometimes expensive, trinkets.

When we got out of the store, I said to him, "Dude, I coulda cleaned that lady out. She was looking at you the whole time!"

He hit me in the shoulder kinda hard and I learned some new cuss words that seemed to be unique to the African American experience of the 1970s.
