I've only been using Unsplash since probably after the changes you describe, but it sounds unfortunate.

I have found that a surprisingly good source for images with a different "feel" to them is Flickr. If you search for an image by topic and filter by Creative Commons license, you can find some pretty good ones, especially if you are handy with Photoshop and are willing to create an adaptation. It is important to be sure to use the correct license for that. One that allows for mods and commercial distribution, but those do exist.
