I'm not a big Newsom fan, but I gotta give him props for taking advantage of Elder and the Republican Party's current plunge into self destruction.

Newsom played Elder up pretty hard, knowing the media would eat it up. This effectively blocked out the messaging of any normal, more centrist Republicans.
