I'm definitely guilty of the New York Times article you cited that says: "there’s little appetite to meaningfully dismantle this advertising infrastructure that undergirds unchecked corporate data collection."

The conveniences I experience don't require location tracking, though, and it seems like an issue that could be addressed pretty simply: make it easier for non-techies to opt-out.

I personally prefer the targeted advertising. No more Mack Weldon underwear ads for me. Now I get ads that I'm interested in once in awhile. I sort of like that, although I wouldn't exactly march in the streets if that capability was taken away from advertisers.

As for one of the characters in the Times piece:

'Mr. Vincent told us that when he wrote “we got inside,” he meant “we the people got in.”

'He added, “I did not go in.” '

I have no sympathy for the dude.

"We the people" did not get in. A bunch of rioters who succumbed to Donald Trump's whining, lying rhetoric got in. I hope they throw the book at the dude. Next time, maybe he'll turn his phone off when he wants to hang out with a bunch of insurrectionists.
