If conservatives are saying this, it's good that they are exposing their game plan.
The costs of mass producing robots continues to decline. Eventually this cost reduction will be exponential. Fast food companies are already experimenting with kitchen robots. McDonald's has ordering kiosks. Trucking firms are looking at driverless interstate vehicles.
My novel MagicLand actually takes place in the wake of the kind of world you talk about. The top one percent decide that the 99% are not worth keeping around, and eradicate them (the novel takes place 2,000 years later).
But here's the thing. You value people. I value people. Most of the readers of this Medium story's author value people.
So we are not helpless. There is still power in numbers. That may not be true sometime in the future if we don't find a way to express that power.
