I was shocked, too, but as time has marched on, I can say if it happened today I wouldn't be shocked. From Dave Duerson to Aaron Hernandez , CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) has been hammering football players for years, but in those days, it was even worse, because the helmets weren't as good as they are today.
I suspect he suffered from CTE, too, possibly beginning at a very early age. CTE is known to trigger violent behavior.
Does that forgive him? I dunno, but it adds another layer.
