I was living in SF when she was DA there. I started telling people then she'd be running for president someday. She had "it" even then.

She was the first big metro area DA that I know of that started talking about reducing recidivism by focusing on rehab, especially for first time and small time drug offenders, who she has always had empathy for and for whom she prefers a treatment-oriented approach.

But she was tough on other criminals, and later tough on Keg Cavanaugh! :-)
