I understand the empathy towards the kid. His family basically participated in an act of child abuse by exposing him so thoroughly to nutty ideas that he felt compelled to drive north of his own state's border with a high capacity weapon and make a stand against racial justice.

Something is horribly wrong there. If he can't be held accountable, then his family should be.
