I think what I get out of this is to just go with my instinct when writing. Sometimes I get too caught up in "proper grammar." And I still get it wrong, anyway, often enough. Put the comma where my gut says to, instead of the English teacher who is sitting on my shoulder sniping at my every sentence.
And keep reading, of course. Sometimes, despite what Stephen King says, that gets hard when I'm in the editing process, because I'm reading my own stuff over and over so much I don't want to see any more sentences written by anyone.
I'll probably always use quotes, but I now I want to read Ng's book! Queuing it up today!
