I recommend Jonathon Schell's Fate of the Earth, which was written during the Reagan years.
The Cliff Notes version is that nobody will survive even a limited nuclear exchange, including so-called survivalists. A nuclear winter is likely to last several years, according to scientists he interviewed, which will wipe out food production.
The world will be encased in a thick cloud cover.
You will die.
The only question is how quickly and how painfully.
