I read the Peace Corpos thing, thanks for the link. You could write that summary up for almost every European country, especially in the east. Try being a Muslim in the suburbs of Paris. Or in Hungary, for that matter. How many Syrian refugees did Poland accept? Africans in all of Europe face discrimination. It's a highly European trait.
That doesn't make it okay to invade a country and slaughter thousands of civilians.
And last I looked, Ukraine wasn't part of NATO.
I'm familiar with the Kohl-Gorbachev talks and further assurances to Boris Yeltsin after the Soviet collapse. I have never been in favor of NATO's eastern expansion. It was an unnecessary provocation, especially the Baltic states. But here's the thing. They desperately wanted in, and now you can see why.
It isn't possible to justify Putin's slaughter of civilians. If we decide that any European country with ignoble attitudes towards certain ethnic groups justified Putin's type of action, all of Europe would qualify.
Putin's war has failed. He tried. He failed. Time to pack up his tanks and go home.
Remember, too, that Putin is misbehaving because Ukraine was a key player among the Soviet Republics that pushed for their independence in 1991. The Russians were themselves a major reason for the breakup of the U.S.S.R. but he doesn't let that get in the way of his grudge.
We're all scared. There is no reason for a European to be any more scared than an American. Nuclear weapons won't care where you live.
Read Jonathon Schell's The Fate of The Earth. Eight to ten low yield nuclear weapons are enough to end the worlds' food production with a nuclear winter. No boundaries.
I don't think Biden wants war with Russia. If he did, he'd initiate a no-fly zone.
The U.S. typically executes an atrocious foreign policy, and I'm not defending that. But I am defending Ukraine's right to exist as a nation, and to sort out their sensibilties towards various ethnic groups they encounter in a civilized manner, without watching their children get their arms blown off by Putin's long range missiles.
