I read many ad-heavy sites with either an ad blocker or with JavaScript turned off (using an on/off button in the toolbar provided by an extension).

Turning off JavaScript kills most ads, including those horrible Taboola ads.

It also defeats paywalls that aren't handled by the server, which is more than one would think.
