I haven't read the book but I read a lot of Dana Milbank and I'm familiar with that straight line. Newt was the starting point of the worst of it, for sure. I agree with another comment that suggests it started with Nixon's Southern Strategy, but Newt is where trash politics became the norm with Republicans. He and the "moral majority."
