I did a little UI work and felt a lot more comfortable after sliding over to the more hardcore full stack stuff because, as young as people are on the software end, they're even younger in UI.

I was lucky on layoffs. They were evenly distributed where I worked. They hit everyone. For one of the companies, I took a "voluntary layoff" because the incentives were great and I figured that a company so willing to create a bloodbath wasn't worth working for any longer.
To me, intense layoffs are a sign of a badly run company, and whenever a company has started that process, I've left on my own. Easier to do when you're in your 30s and 40s, though, than it would be now, of course.
