Growing up, I always assumed being Black to mean being descendants of enslaved African Americans. But it's a moot point what I think. I have no business trying to define it for others.

I will say that it seems important to recognize these descendants in some way. They represent an amazing group of people who have overcome outrageous adversity and gifted the rest of us with an amazing culture and example of grace, fortitude, spirit, and courage that should be recognized and taught to our children.
