Good observations. My first experience was when I was very young, still a teenager, and my best friend, a Black guy, and I went to a little touristy area together and when we walked into the shops (more than one) the proprietors' eyes were trained on him until we left. That was creepy. And it was before I had heard of the word or concept of profiling.

Being a teenager (or maybe a bit older - I can't remember) I said, "Dude, I could have cleaned out the shelves while they were staring at you."

He grinned from ear to ear, probably surprised I noticed (it was impossible not to) and also probably because it was good for him to laugh about it, at least for a moment.
