Before this movie was released, I felt that Spielberg, despite his obvious commercial success, was underrated and somewhat underappreciated by the critics. Maybe he still is, but he's been my favorite director for a very long time, not in small part because of his range. Scorsese is great, of course, but I can't imagine him creating an ET. It's just not in him.
