As someone who was born, raised and spent my early adult life there, there's probably a very ugly answer to that question.
I had high hopes for Lightfoot, and maybe I still do. I assume she's up against quite a cast of characters.
Burge was really a symptom of the disease, right? Imagine being Lightfoot and having to go up against the likes of Mike Madigan's boys, the various racist unions (there are more than a few of these), the police union, the various aldermanic crime networks - the list goes on.
So I guess the question will be, is she going to fight it? Or get sucked into it?
I can't begin to guess, especially with covid-19 possibly getting in the way of any serious plans she had for reform.
I'm not excusing her for this, though - it all sucks. Mostly I'm just curious about what she is really looking at and whether she is in flight or fight mode.
