Actually, Quark is what I cut my teeth on from a design standpoint. Loved it. I used Quark and I guess I had one of the very few copies of BarneyScan before it became Photoshop.
Then I got a freelance design job at McDonald's and my boss was an old school designer who yelled at her superiors for hiring someone who didn't know how to cut on an art board.
So she told me, "You won't be using that software while you work with me," and she taught me all kinds of stuff on the old art board! She scared the crap out of me at first, but she was awesome.
I switched to InDesign much later, mostly because I subscribed to the Creative Suite and Quark became redundant.
